New EpiSwitch test for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Oxford BioDynamics (OBD) has developed a novel EpiSwitch-based blood test for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). OBD’s 3D genomics platform assessed the profile of chromosome conformations in CFS and identified a diagnostic signature. The CFS/ME test has achieved a 96% overall accuracy, with 92% sensitivity and 98% specificity in a proof-of-concept study. OBD will now seek a co-development or licensing partner for the CFS/ME test in order to accelerate future development.
  • In a retrospective case-control study, blood samples from 47 patients with severe CFS/ME were compared to 61 age-matched healthy controls. Whole genome screening was performed which enabled the identification of a 200-marker model to diagnose CFS/ME. The performance was then assessed using an independent validation cohort. The data have been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Translational Medicine.
  • CFS is a complex, chronic, and serious condition that affects millions globally (400,000 in the UK and 3.3m in the US alone). Diagnosis is typically protracted, being reliant on symptom-based criteria and the exclusion of other conditions. The development of any reliable test has been hampered by the lack of objective and reliable biomarkers. The CFS/ME test not only offers the potential to significantly reduce the time to diagnosis and provide more effective disease management, but helps validate the EpiSwitch platform’s ability to identify actionable disease-specific biomarkers across complex indications.
  • OBD’s proprietary EpiSwitch 3D genomics platform is already in use in two commercially available tests, EpiSwitch PSE, for prostate cancer, and EpiSwitch CiRT, for assessing response to immune-oncology therapy. The pipeline also includes EpiSwitch NST, for colorectal cancers, and EpiSwitch SCB, for the most common canine cancers, which are ready for partnering or out-licensing. An earlier programme includes a test for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Trinity Delta view: OBD is at the forefront of exploiting 3D genomics to build a portfolio of clinically relevant diagnostics that address clear needs, are accurate, reproducible, and, importantly, are minimally invasive and easy to perform. The successful development of this CFS test is yet another example that highlights the potential of the EpiSwitch platform. Management’s near-term focus remains on securing one or more partnerships, collaborations and/or licensing deals to maximise the revenue potential of its growing portfolio of innovative and clinically robust tests. Longer-term sustainable test volume growth will require substantial ongoing commercial investment, and thus third-party partners or further funds are needed to deliver on the sizeable potential market opportunities for CiRT, PSE, and the EpiSwitch test portfolio.
